With the Holiday season fast approaching, this also means cold weather is fast approaching. Chilly temperatures can cause our skin to dry out and even crack. Here are some helpful tips to take care of your skin this winter.
1. Protect your skin from the sun every day
You don’t necessarily have to spend the day at the beach to get a sunburn. Even spending the day outside during the chilly, winter months can cause harmful sun damage. You can protect your skin by seeking shade, covering up with clothing and using sunscreen that is broad-spectrum. You should apply sunscreen every day to all skin that is not covered by clothing, especially your face!
2. Don’t smoke
There are several reasons why smoking is unhealthy, including aging your skin. Smoking causes wrinkles and dries out your skin even more during the winter months.
3. Avoid repetitive facial expressions
Frowning causes more of a strain to your face than smiling. If you repeatedly frown, these lines can become permanent. Smile more each day for healthier looking skin!
4. Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet
Findings from a few studies suggest that eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables may help prevent damage that leads to premature skin aging. Fruits and vegetables contain several healthy nutrients, one of which being carotenoids. Research also suggests that a diet containing a lot of sugar or other refined carbohydrates can accelerate aging. This holiday season, make sure to eat plenty of vegetables and not just those tasty desserts.
5. Drink less alcohol
Alcohol is a diuretic. This means that it promotes the production of urine and increases the excretion of water from our body. This, in turn, dehydrates the skin. Caffeine is also a diuretic, so cut back on the coffee and soda.
6. Try to sleep on your back.
Sleeping on the side or your face causes some lines which may, in time, turn in to permanent wrinkles.
7. Wash your face twice a day and after sweating heavily
Perspiration, especially when wearing a hat or helmet, irritates the skin. You want to wash your skin as soon as possible after sweating.
