A lot of people can be intimidated by their first waxing appointment. You’ve probably heard all the worst rumors, but here are a few truths that you should really pay attention to when prepping for a wax.
1. Grow Baby, Grow!
All of the professionals suggest letting your hair grow out prior to a waxing session. By letting your hair lengthen to approximately 1/4 of an inch, you can ensure that the wax will have enough hair to take hold of. The wax’s ability to adhere to the hair is critical, which is why the longer it is, the better.

2. Exfoliation is Key
One of the most highly recommended ways to prepare for a wax is to exfoliate the area beforehand. Exfoliating your body will remove any dead skin cells that could get in the wax’s way as it tries to grip your hair, and it will also reduce your risk for developing clogged pores.
3. Skip the Workout
Just like consuming alcohol or caffeine, going to the gym will increase your body’s circulation, which is best to avoid before a session.
A little sweat will also go a long way in ruining your recent wax since it will encourage your hair follicles to open up, which is the exact opposite reaction that you want. Instead, you should attempt to close these follicles and reduce swelling by applying ice packs and aloe gel to the affected area.
4. Toughen Up, Buttercup
The scariest thing you’ve probably heard about waxing is that it hurts, a lot. We aren’t going to lie to you, it does hurt, but it also works.
You can ease into the hair removal process by taking an over-the-counter paid medication like Advil or ibuprofen about 30 minutes before your waxing session. It is also advised to avoid alcohol and caffeine prior to a wax in order to prevent soreness. Both of these beverages encourage blood circulation, which is normally great, unless you are about to get a wax. Essentially, more circulation will lead to more pain.
5. Hold Off on the Hydration
Moisturizing before a hair removal session will make it much more difficult for the wax to adhere to your hairs, as it will inevitably make them all slippery.
Soothing your skin post-wax with moisture-intensive lotion sounds like a lovely idea, right? Wrong. Your skin is likely going to be a little irritated, but it is truly best to just let it breathe for at least a day or two so that you can avoid clogging all your newly exposed pores.
6. Looking.. Good?
As previously mentioned, your skin is going to be slightly irritated by its sudden hairlessness. You are likely to notice red, swollen, and even bumpy areas that have been freshly waxed, and all of this is absolutely normal.
The best thing that you can do for yourself and your skin now that you’ve completed a hair removal session is to closely follow all instructions given by your esthetician. Other general recommendations include staying out of the sun and refraining from sex if you have had a Brazilian Wax. It is also wise to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and utilizing moisturizers once a few days have passed since your last wax.
