The Difference Between Electrolysis and Laser Hair Removal

Mystic Valley Dermatology provides more than just one option in terms of permanent hair removal solutions. Both electrolysis and laser hair removal are popular choices when it comes to this type of service, but are you aware of the difference between the two?

What is Electrolysis?

Electrolysis is a method of hair removal that utilizes a specialized device to disrupt hair growth. The device emits shortwave radio frequencies to the hair follicles, which damages them to the point where hair will no longer grow.

Don’t worry, this is not a painful process. The most common side effect that patients experience as part of their electrolysis treatments is some slight redness of the skin. All treatments are incredibly safe when performed by a licensed professional. Electrolysis is even backed by the FDA as a permanent hair removal solution. Currently, the only providers allowed to perform electrology are licensed electrologists who have graduated from a full time electrology course and passed practical and written state tests.

Woman after electrolysis treatmentsAnother common treatment method for unwanted hair on the body is laser hair removal. Instead of using radio frequencies, this method is performed with high-heat lasers that administer small, controlled amounts of non-ionizing radiation to the targeted area in order to damage the hair follicles and prevent new growth.

Just like electrolysis, laser hair removal requires several treatments before results will become permanent. There are, however, more minor side effects associated with this course of treatment, including:

  • Inflammation
  • Irritation
  • Changes in skin color
  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Blisters

If these symptoms do not resolve themselves within a few hours of your laser hair removal treatment, please contact your provider to address them. These risks, and those associated with electrolysis treatments, both worsen considerably if you choose not to have your hair removal procedure completed by a professional.
